Bridge Replacement: BF 2181

Name: Culvert Installation on a Local Road over Lonepine Creek near Olds (BF 2181).
Location: 4 miles east of Olds, AB
Client: Mountain View County
Project Cost: $119,466.40

Previous Structure:  Single span 8.5 m type PG precast concrete girder bridge on a treated timber substructure.

New Structure:  2 – 2700 mm diameter CSP’s with an invert length of 29 m on a 20o RHF skew.

Roseke Engineering was engaged by Mountain View County to replace this bridge which was nearing the end of its life span.  We were the prime consultant for the project, and were responsible for all project phases including preliminary engineering, detailed design, tender preparation, tender opening and award, construction supervision, and final details.

Our bridge expertise enabled the bridge to be completed under budget with no major issues during construction or afterwards.

Most counties and M.D.’s have many bridge similar to this one.  Single span timber bridges that were built in the 1950’s and 1960’s are usually replaced with cheaper corrugated steel pipes (CSP).  The longevity of the CSP’s are dependent on the strength of the backfill, which is normally specified as Alberta Transportation Designation 6 Class 80 material compacted to 95% of standard proctor density.

Cost control is often focused on the size of the backfill envelope, amount of riprap at the ends, and miscellaneous items such as silt fence.  The engineer should double check the quantities, even of the small items, prior to releasing the project to tender.

Roseke Engineering Ltd. performs many projects similar to this.  Our bridge team specializes in County/M.D. bridges:

Bernie Roseke, P.Eng., PMP is the founder and president of Roseke Engineering Ltd.  He has 20 years experience in the design of rural bridges, culverts, and drainage structures, primarily for Counties, M.D.’s and Alberta Transportation.

Levi Ober, P.L.(Eng.) is the bridge manager and responsible for delivering bridge projects on time and budget.  He has 14 years experience in the assessment, design and construction supervision experience on County, M.D. and Alberta Transportation bridges.  He has designed every type of standard bridge and bridge sized culvert, and he is a class B bridge inspector.

Riley Johnson, T.T. is a junior bridge technologist.  He has assisted with design and performed construction supervision services on numerous bridge projects, and his enthusiasm for bridge work is very high.
