Bridge File 75884

Project Name: Bridge Replacement on Local Road over a Tributary to the Bow River
Location: Mossleigh, AB
Description: Replacement of a 8.5 m single span bridge with a 3.0 m diameter corrugated steel pipe pipe, 25 m long, with a concrete end treatment on the upstream end.

Roseke Engineering Ltd. was the prime consultant for this bridge replacement project, providing the preliminary engineering, detailed design, tendering, construction supervision and post-construction engineering services.

The bridge was in poor condition and nearing the end of its life span.  The replacement culvert will last approximately 50 years.

The existing bridge was being used as a cattle pass structure by the adjacent landowner when it was not in use by mother nature as a watercourse.  The new culvert contains a substrate fill material that will allow cattle to pass through as well as a little bit of water at the same time.

The concrete end treatment (collar) is required by Alberta Transportation specifications on the upstream end of culverts with a diameter of 2700 mm or 3000 mm.  Above that, both ends require concrete collars.  The concrete serves to weigh down the culvert end to prevent uplift during high streamflow events.  Throughout Alberta’s highway network, there are plenty of instances where local flood events resulted in a culvert end sticking straight up or being pulled away.
