Bridge File 918

Project Name: Bridge Replacement on a Local Road over the Little Bow River
Location: 10 km west of Vulcan, AB
Previous Structure: 3 span, 3 x 8.5 m type HC girder bridge on a treated timber substructure.
New Structure: 4 span, 4 x 10 m type SL-510 precast girder bridge on a cast-in-place concrete substructure.

The existing bridge washed out during the 2013 floods.  Roseke Engineering Ltd. was commissioned as the prime consultant for the new bridge replacement.  The project was a success and the County now has a bridge that will not wash out again under the same flood.

Hydrologically, the 2013 flood was investigated to determine what its flow, stage, and return period was.  This was further complicated by the controlled nature of the flow in the Little Bow River – Although the river itself is natural, a hydraulic gate at the town of High River is the source of all flow into the stream.  During the 2013 flood this gate overtopped, hence the exact return period of the 2013 flood at this site was difficult to define.  However, the new bridge was placed slightly higher and is likely to survive the same event.

This new bridge structure is higher and has a stronger substructure, hence the County can rest assured that the resilience of their bridge program has been significantly enhanced.  At Roseke Engineering Ltd. we love to assist Counties in making their bridge programs more efficient, cheaper, and effective.
