Project Name: Bear Pond Dam Erosion Repairs
Location: Kananaskis Country, AB
Description: Placement of fill and rock riprap, and repair of the dam outlet culvert

Roseke Engineering Ltd. helped Alberta Environment & Parks to maintain the integrity of the dam without sacrificing the ability of the public to experience world class fishing and hiking at this site.

The dam was experiencing erosion on its front face and the outlet culvert was projecting into the reservoir.  The solution was to place additional fill on the dam face and install a BeaverStop on the culvert end to prevent wildlife from blocking the outlet (and hurting themselves).

Our work involved designing the dam repairs, tendering the project, and supervising construction.

The Bear Pond is a world class fishing destination, therefore sedimentation of the lake would have been detrimental to the fish in the lake and consequently the ability of the public to experience the natural environment.  To prevent harm to fish, turbidity curtains were installed and full time sedimentation monitoring was performed on the outer side of the curtain using boats to ensure the full length of turbidity curtain was being tested.  If at any time the turbidity levels were exceeded, the project would initiate a complete shutdown.  Fortunately this did not happen, and the fishing value of the site was fully preserved.

Additionally, several grizzly bear encounters during the project necessitated the use of safe job procedures that included bear spray and air horns for each worker, and a policy of travel to/from the site accompanied by heavy equipment.  We were thankful for the COR safety program that can easily adapt provide for the safety of everyone involved (including the bears).

Erosion control projects are an important part of our service capabilities:
