Fibreglass Bridges in Bob Creek Wildland Provincial Park

Project Name: Eight Pedestrian Bridges in Bob Creek Wildland Provincial Park
Location: Bob Creek Wildland Provincial Park
Description: Design of eight pedestrian bridges

Roseke Engineering Ltd. was the first Alberta-based engineering firm to design Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) bridges for Alberta Environment & Parks.  FRP, commonly known as Fibreglass┬« is a polymer reinforced with glass fibres.

FRP is significantly lighter than steel.  It has one-third of the weight but also slightly less strength than the equivalent steel section, which can be compensated for by increasing the size of the member.

There are no design codes or specifications for FRP bridges in Canada.  As such, the bridges were designed to the American codes, specifically the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Design of FRP Bridges.

The primary benefit of FRP bridges is their weight.  Agencies have typically used them for backcountry bridges where transport of heavy steel components was difficult and/or expensive.

Our bridge team has performed hundreds of bridge sized culvert projects and we would love to help you with yours:

Bernie Roseke, P.Eng., PMP is the founder and president of Roseke Engineering Ltd.  He has 20 years experience in the design of rural bridges, culverts, and drainage structures, primarily for Counties, M.D.’s and Alberta Transportation.

Levi Ober, P.L.(Eng.) is our bridge manager and responsible for delivering bridge projects on time and budget.  He has 14 years experience in the assessment, design and construction supervision experience on County, M.D. and Alberta Transportation bridges.  He has designed every type of standard bridge and bridge sized culvert, and he is a class B bridge inspector.

Riley Johnson, T.T. is our junior bridge technologist.  He has assisted with design and performed construction supervision services on numerous bridge projects, and his enthusiasm for bridge work is very high.
