Roseke Engineering Ltd. provided the structural design for this open bottom culvert at the new Dolly Varden Day Use Area on Highway 93/95 in Kootenay National Park. We worked directly for Parks Canada in partnership with several other firms to deliver the project in an expedited manner due to funding considerations.
The structure provides a small model of the highway overpasses within the mountain national parks. It contains several interesting exhibits relating to the wildlife overpasses for travelers between Radium and Lake Louise.
The culvert was a steel structural plate corrugated steel pipe that was placed on cast-in-place concrete footings. The ends of the culvert were then surrounded with a cast-in-place concrete collar.
The new Dolly Varden Day Use Area is one of the stand-out locations in the area to stop for a break, for wildlife viewing, or for a bite to eat.
