Project Name: Culvert Replacement of Bridge File 72027
Location: Brooks, AB
Description: Replacement of the single 2490 mm x 1755 mm SPCSP arch culvert and 1740 mm diameter CSP with a single 2700 mm diameter CSP

Roseke Engineering Ltd. helped Alberta Transportation with the replacement of this culvert, which was nearing the end of its service life.

The project involved the construction of a detour road around the site, excavation and removal of the existing two culverts, installation of the new culvert, riprap and erosion control, and repaving of the highway.

There was contaminated material at the northwest corner of the site resulting from an oil tanker leaving the road about 10 years earlier.  This material had to be tested before it could be used as backfill again.  The material ended up testing negative for hydrocarbons, but it was removed from the site anyway.

During the southern Alberta overland flooding event of April 14-16, 2018, the detour road around the site washed out during the evening of Friday, April 14 at about 9:00 pm.  Since we were aware of the possibility of this occurring, we monitored the site full time until the detour road overtopped, and ordered the Contractor to close the road immediately.  A local road detour was set up to direct traffic around the site during the night, which required ensuring the necessary lighting and signs were in place on short notice (and on the weekend).  All of this was arranged during the day on that friday on a precautionary basis (at the time), so it could be rapidly deployed in the evening.

This required strong communication with the County of Newell.  Even though the Contractor was responsible for maintaining the detour, the roads deteriorated and required significant maintenance.

The project ended up as a poster child of the power of strong communication with projectstakeholders.
