BIM Inspections

Project Name: BIM Inspections
Location: various
Description: Regular bridge inspections under the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) System

Roseke Engineering Ltd. has performed many bridge inspections throughout Alberta under the Bridge Inspection and Maintenance (BIM) system.  Regularly scheduled bridge inspections ensure that every bridge, bridge-sized culvert, sign structure, and other miscellaneous structures are inspected on a cycle that ensures public safety and refers problems to the next steps of engineering design and construction.

BIM inspections are performed on a cycle of 21 – 57 months, depending on the importance of the structure and roadway it is located on.

The BIM inspector rates each component of the structure on a scale of 1 to 9, where 1 is imminent danger the public and 9 is brand new.  A 4 or less means that repair is recommended:

  • 4:  Low priority for repair
  • 3:  Medium priority for repair
  • 2:  High priority for repair
  • 1:  Imminent danger – immediate road closure initiated

These bottom-four ratings are interpreted to mean the bridge should be escalated to the next level of budgeting of repair and/or replacement.

To aid in this next step, the BIM inspection form contains a list of items of required maintenance, which must correspond to any rating of 4 or less.  It also requires an estimate of the structure’s remaining life.
