Bridge File 548: Bridge Replacement

Name: Bridge Replacement – Local Road over Cripple Creek west of Claresholm, AB
Location: 12 miles west of Claresholm, AB
Owner: Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26
Project Cost: $191,750
Construction Dates: October 16 – 30, 2012

Previous Structure: Single Span, 8.5 m treated timber girder bridge.

New Structure: Double 2700 mm Corrugated Steel Pipe culverts with a 32 m invert length.

Roseke Engineering was engaged by the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26 as the prime consultant for this bridge replacement project. We were responsible for all project phases including preliminary engineering, detailed design, tender preparation, tender opening and award, construction supervision, and project conclusion.

Fish habitat concerns necessitated the placement of boulders along the downstream channel, as well as the staggering of the inverts such that the south culvert was 250 mm lower than the north one.

Also, unexpected winter conditions during construction required mitigation measures and extensive monitoring of backfill conditions during placement to ensure a stable and structurally sound end product.
